The 1971 Mustang Mach 1 is known as the last great Mustang to come out of the muscle car era. It was a more attractive and powerful revamp of previous Mustang models. Let’s take a look at some of the details that made the ’71 Mustang Mach 1 so iconic.
’71 Mustang Mach 1 Appearance Upgrades
The ’71 Mach 1 was designed to stand out from other pony cars on the market. The car’s interior was built for ultimate comfort. It had slim high back bucket seats, a floor console with lighted ashtray, and molded door trims. Water temperature and oil pressure gauges were added to make maintenance easier.
On the exterior, the Mach 1 sported a black honeycomb grill with sport headlamps, decals on the fenders, and color-keyed racing mirrors with a driver side remote. It also had an impact resistant front bumper. One of the most noticeable features is the dual scoop hood design.
The body of the car was extended by 2 inches and widened by 3 inches. The front tracks were also widened by 3 inches. It was 400 pounds heavier than the 1970 model. The creator of the Mustang hated the bigger body design and went as far as calling it “a fat pig”. Ford Motor Company President at the time, Bunkie Knudsen, justified the bigger body of the Mach 1 by saying it was designed to fit the new Super Cobra Jet engine.
429 Super Cobra Jet 7.0L
The 429 Super Cobra Jet was rated at 370HP and 450ft-lb of torque. The added weight of the engine in an already oversized body did not slow the new Mustang down. The Mach 1 was recorded to go 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and finish a quarter mile in 14.6 seconds at 99.4 miles per hour.

Our April Day 1 auction features a sleek silver 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Cobra 2WD. The car runs and drives and only has 92,248 miles. The ignition has been changed to an electronic ignition system.
