A Gold-Plated Rossi Rifle
This October, Compass presents Pistols at the Prison, a 2-day gun show and live firearm auction at Brushy Mountain State Pen in Petros, Tennessee. The event’s live auction will feature over 300 lots of firearms for online and in-person bidding. Some of these lots feature highly unique items, like a Rossi Model 92 .45 Colt. Bristol Motor Speedway sold only 100 of these gold-plated rifles as part of its 50th anniversary. The specific anniversary rifle that Compass is bringing to auction is #8 out of 100.
The Bristol Motor Speedway
Known as “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile”, Bristol Motor Speedway is one of NASCAR’s loudest raceways. The track opened in 1961, before its acquisition by Speedway Motorsports Inc. in 1996.
Notably, the half-mile short track is the tenth-largest sports venue worldwide. Thanks to the sheer size of the raceway, it’s also been used to host football games and concerts over the years.
While the track was originally close to an exact half-mile long, it’s slightly longer these days at .533 miles. That’s thanks to years of repaving and changes to the angle of the track’s banked turns.
The 2011 Jeff Byrd 500
Bristol Motor Speedway celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. Bristol was the site for the 4th and 24th title races in that year’s NASCAR Spring Cup Series. This race was also the occasion for the manufacture and sale of the 50th Anniversary rifle.
The 4th title race that season was the 2011 Jeff Byrd 500, in memory of Bristol Motor Speedway’s longtime president and general manager Jeff Byrd. This marked the first time since 1991 that the race didn’t keep its usual name of The Food City 500.
Kyle Busch, Number 18, was the winner of the Anniversary race, making it his 20th career victory. He would later win 3 other races in the series, finishing in 12th place.
