Evolution of the Ford F-Series Super Duty

For the past 100 years, Ford has pioneered the automotive industry. From their first all-purpose truck in 1917, to today’s lineup of award-winning pickups, “Ford trucks [have] carried the loads, the people, and the products necessary to get the job done,” says Bob Kreipke, a Ford historian. The most iconic vehicles in the world, Ford F-series pickups have been the best-selling trucks in America for the past 40 years and the best-selling vehicle overall for 35 years straight.

1975 – It’s only right that we start with the ancestor of Super Duty. The F-150 was introduced to compete with commercial General Motors vehicles. It was the first truck to adapt to the more active American lifestyle. The F-150 gave people a vehicle they could use for work during the week and could also use to haul the family on the weekends.

The F-150 inspired the slogan we all know and love, “Built Ford Tough.”

1998 – Google was founded, France won the world cup, and Ford debuted the F-Series Super Duty pickups. The F-250, F-350, and F-450 models had a bigger cab, a new body style, beefier frames, bigger axels, and a stronger suspension. The Super Duty proved to be a consumer-friendly truck with serious commercial-grade capabilities. Ford also made company history by separating the production of their vehicles into two different production plants. F-series pickups were built at the Louisville, KY plant.

2011 – Ford decided to Go Further with their third generation Super Duty lineup. Each of the models got a total makeover with a new front end – including a new grill, headlights, taillights, and fenders – the interior also saw an upgrade. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) saved consumers on fuel costs improved mileage and the diesel engine was switched to an in-house model and is still being used today.

2017 – For the first time since 1998, the Ford F-series saw a complete redesign. The F-150 and F-250 used the same cab and the front and rear end designs were upgraded with LED highlights to give the truck a modern look. An aluminum body was used to save weight for a new reinforced frame.

The F-series is a true staple of American history. What models did your family have when you were growing up? Do you prefer the F-250, F-350, or F-450? Let us know on our Facebook page.
